Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Tigers have placed catcher Alex Avila on the 15-day disabled list with a left knee injury.

Avila was a late scratch Friday night due to a right forearm contusion.

An MRI exam on his left knee, which had been bothering him for weeks, revealed loose bodies that likely will require arthroscopic surgery. Avila was seeking a second opinion on Saturday morning, but will likely miss anywhere from 2- to-6 weeks

Avila is batting .200 with two home runs and eight RBI in 22 games this season.

With Avila out, rookie James McCann will get the majority of the starts behind the plate. To back up McCann, the Tigers recalled Bryan Holaday from Triple-A Toledo.

In 18 games with the Mud Hens this season, Holaday was hitting .230 with seven runs scored, three doubles, one home run and nine RBI.
