Jordyn Wieber (DeWitt, Mich.) won the U.S. senior women's day all-around score of 121.300. Meanwhile, Danell Leyva (Homestead, Fla.) around title on Aug. 19 with a two-day combined around total of 183.800.
Class Is In Session
The 2011 USA Basketball Women's World University Games Team won the gold medal with a 101-66 victory over Taiwan on Aug. 21 in Shenzhen, China. The team added wins this week over Great Britain, Finland and Australia en route to a perfect 6-0 record and the gold medal. On the men's side, Team USA finished fifth, securing wins over Romania and Germany after falling to Lithuania in the quarterfinals.
Canoe/Kayak
U.S. ParaCanoe athletes kicked off the 2011 ICF Sprint World Championships on Aug. 18 with two medals. Robert Balk (Moravia, N.Y.) won the silver medal in Men's V1 200m, while Tami Hetke (Boulder Creek, Calif.) took bronze in Women's V1 200m. Balk crossed the line in 1:02.98, three-hundredths of a second behind the first-place finisher.
Cycling
Following a rain delay in London, Nicholas Long (Lakeside, Calif.) won bronze for the United States at the official BMX Olympic Test Event and UCI Supercross BMX World Cup #3. Amanda Carr (Punta Gorda, Fla.) was the only American female to make the final and finished fifth overall.
Eric Young (Bloomington, Ind.) won a field sprint to win the 2011 Herman Miller USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championships on Aug. 20 in Grand Rapids, Mich. The 23-year-old Young edged Charles Huff (Springfield, Mo.) at the finish line to earn his first Stars-and-Stripes jersey.
Diving
A week after winning their first national title together, Amy Cozad (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Amy Korthauer (Naperville, Ill.) finished fourth in synchronized platform on Aug. 19 at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China. Earlier in the tournament, 2008 Olympian Kelci Bryant (Chatham, Ill.) won the silver medal in the women's 1-meter competition on Aug. 16.
Fencing
The U.S. women's epee team won its second medal of the season at the World University Games in Shenzen, China, on Aug. 16 with a silver-medal finsih. Also competing that day, the U.S. Men's Saber Team closed out the World University Games in sixth place.
Modern Pentathlon
Anna Olesinski (Roswell, N.M.) and Lucas Schrimsher (Roswell, N.M.) teamed up to capture the bronze medal on Aug. 21 during the mixed relay event at the Modern Pentathlon Youth A World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.The American duo placed eighth in the fencing event, seventh in the swim and second in the combined run/shoot.Meanwhile, Olesinski vaulted from 49th place after the swim to finish 13th in the final standings in the women's individual competition. Schrimsher was the top American men's finisher in 30th place.
Rowing
The USRowing Pan American Games Trials concluded on Aug. 18 in West Windsor, N.J., where 11 crews were selected to represent the U.S. at the upcoming Pan American Games.
Taekwondo
The 2011 USA Men's World University Games Team defeated Romania on Aug. 21 in Shenzhen, China, to advance to the tournament's fifth-place game. Meanwhile, poomsae competition at the World University Games wrapped up on Aug. 19 with the U.S. men's team advancing to the final round, where the squad earned seventh place. The women's team performed Taeguek 8 and Koryo, giving a strong performance in the semifinals to finish ninth.
Tennis
Mardy Fish (Tampa Bay, Fla.) knocked off Rafael Nadal, 6-3, 6-4, at the Western & Southern Open on Aug. 19. Fish's first career win over second-ranked Nadal sent the American into the tournament's semifinals for the second straight year. Prior to the win, Fish clinched the 2011 Olympus US Open Series men's title with a 7-5, 7-5, round of 16 win over Richard Gasquet on Aug. 18. It is the first Olympus U.S. Open Series title for Fish, who finished third in the standings last year.
Triathlon
2012 U.S. Olympic qualifiers Gwen Jorgensen (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Sarah Groff (Hanover, N.H.) continued their stellar 2011 seasons by placing sixth and seventh on Aug. 20 at the ITU Elite Sprint Triathlon World Championships. The event also served as the sixth stop of the ITU World Championship Series. Later in the weekend, the U.S. squad of Groff, Jorgensen, Barrett Brandon (Fort Worth, Texas) and Mark Fretta (Portland, Ore.) earned a fifth-place finish at the 2011 ITU Team Triathlon World Championships. The Americans combined for a time of 1:11:32 in the mixed-team relay event.
Volleyball
The U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team finished second in the FIVB World Grand Prix preliminary round with an 8-1 record and 23 points.Team USA is the third seed in the final round and will play against No. 2 Brazil, No. 6 Italy and No. 7 Japan in Pool B.
The U.S. men's team ended the World University Games on a winning note with a 25-19, 23-25, 25-16, 25-14 victory over Norway on Aug. 21 in Shenzhen, China. The U.S. finished the tournament in 13th place with a 5-3 record.
The U.S. women's beach volleyball team of Misty May-Treanor (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (San Jose, Calif.) earned the silver medal on Aug. 20 at the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour Paf Open in Aland, Finland, after falling to China's second-seeded Chen Xue and Xi Zhang in the gold-medal match, 21-16, 17-21, 15-9. Meanwhile, the top-seeded U.S. men's team of Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) had to forfeit the gold-medal match on Aug. 21 after Rogers injured his knee.
Water Polo
The U.S. women's water polo team will play for gold and the U.S. men will play for bronze at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China. The women defeated Italy, 9-8, on Aug. 20, to advance to the championship game against China, while the men were edged by Russia, 11-10, in the semifinals on Aug. 21 to garner a spot in the bronze-medal match against Macedonia. The women's team advanced after defeating Great Britain in the quarterfinal, while the men knocked off Spain in the same round to move on.
Weightlifting
Jessie Humeston (Elbert, Colo.) and Michael Tirrito (Livingston, N.J.) each set new personal records at the 2011 World University Games on Aug. 16. Humeston placed 10th in the 63kg division.
