Porto, Portugal – FC Porto clinched its third straight Portuguese Liga title on Sunday and its seventh in the last eight years with a 2-0 win at Pacos Ferreira on the last day of the season.
Benfica and Porto spent the entire campaign locked in a tight battle at the top, but Porto's last-gasp 2-1 win over Benfica last weekend allowed the defending champions to overtake the Lisbon outfit.
Porto entered Sunday's match one point clear of Benfica, and needed a win to secure its 27th title in club history.
Lucho Gonzalez put Porto in front from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute after Ricardo Pinto was sent off for Pacos, and Jackson Martinez sealed the win with his league-leading 26th goal of the season in the 52nd minute.
Porto was also reduced to 10 men four minutes later as Danilo received his second yellow card, but the visitors held out to claim the win, finishing the season with an unbeaten record of 24 wins and six draws.
The result forced Benfica to settle for second place, one point back of Porto, after the club recorded a 3-1 win over Moreirense courtesy of two goals in the last 10 minutes from Lima.
Braga ends the season in fourth place after a 1-0 win at Setubal with the lone goal coming from Ze Luis, while Estoril and Sporting Lisbon will join them in the Europa League next season.
Estoril got two goals from Steven Vitoria on Sunday in a 3-1 win at Gil Vicente and Sporting handed last-place Beira Mar a 4-1 defeat with Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Adrien Silva netting two goals apiece.
Nacional topped Academica, 2-1, with a second-half goal from Ladji Keita, Bruno Braga's 51st-minute goal was enough for a 1-0 Rio Ave win at Guimaraes and Maritimo played out a 0-0 draw at Olhanense.
