Sochi, Russia (SportsNetwork.com) - There are five medal events Monday at the Sochi Olympics.
German skier Maria Hofl-Riesch will attempt to defend her Olympic title in the women's super combined with the downhill and slalom portions taking place on the same day.
American Julia Mancuso, the 2006 Olympic champion in giant slalom, won silver in the combined four years ago behind Hofl-Riesch and will be trying to capture a fourth Olympic medal. Canada's medal hopes rest on Marie-Michele Gagnon, the first Canadian to win a World Cup race in the event.
Four years ago, Alexandre Bilodeau became the first Canadian ever to capture an Olympic gold medal on home soil when he won the men's moguls competition on Cypress Mountain outside Vancouver. Bilodeau will get a chance to defend his Olympic title on Monday against some familiar faces.
Dale Begg-Smith, the Vancouver-born millionaire who skis for Australia and who won the event in 2006, will try to get revenge after finishing second behind Bilodeau in 2010. American Bradley Wilson, the younger brother of 2010 bronze medalist Bryon Wilson, is also in the field.
Norway's Ole Einar Bjoerndalen can set the all-time record for most Winter Olympics medals with a finish in the top three Monday in the men's biathlon pursuit.
Bjoerndalen will start the 12.5-kilometer race with a one-second head start over Dominik Landertinger after beating the Austrian to win the men's sprint event on Saturday. That was Bjoerndalen's 12th Olympic medal, which tied countryman Bjorn Daehlie for the Winter Olympics record. Among Bjoerndalen's medals is a gold in the pursuit from the 2002 Olympics.
Canadian brothers Charles and Francois Hamelin will skate in the men's 1,500- meter short track event Monday, trying to build off their medal success four years ago. Charles won the 500 meters in Vancouver and both brothers were on the gold medal-winning men's relay team. J.R. Celski, who won bronze in 2010, will go for the U.S.
There will also be short track speedskating heats for the women's 500 meters and semifinals for the women's 3,000 meters on Monday.
South Korean speedskater Mo Tae Bum will go for a second straight Olympic gold medal in the men's 500 meters.
Shani Davis got the last spot on the U.S. team in the 500 meters after a teammate was disqualified for an infraction, but it's not the American star's best event. In Wednesday's 1,000 meters, Davis will try to become the first American man to win the same event in three straight Winter Olympics.
In women's hockey, the U.S. and Canada will both be back in action after opening with wins on Saturday. The U.S. will take on Switzerland and Canada will play Finland in Group A play.
Monday will also see the first two runs in women's luge singles and the start of the men's and women's curling tournaments with 12 total ends, including eight for the men.
Canada will begin its quest for a third straight Olympic gold medal in the men's tournament against Germany. Canada's women's team, after taking silver behind Sweden four years ago, opens against China.
The U.S. men's team will play Norway and the women will face Switzerland. The U.S. hasn't won an Olympic curling medal since the men took bronze in 2006.
