Marseille, France – Marseille kept pace with Lyon at the top of the Ligue 1 table on Saturday by earning a 2-0 victory over Evian at the Stade Velodrome.
Lyon moved to the summit of the French top flight with a 3-1 victory over Sochaux on Friday, and Marseille was also able to improve to six points on the season thanks to a rather comfortable victory at home.
Marseille claimed the victory with goals on opposite sides of halftime. Andre- Pierre Gignac bagged his second goal of the season when he opened the scoring in the 16th minute, and Dimitri Payet put the result beyond any doubt when he added an insurance goals in the 67th minute.
Payet's strike brings his tally to three goals through the first two weeks of the season, enough to tie him with Lyon's Alexandre Lacazette atop the Ligue 1 scoring chart.
Marseille moves to second place in the table on goal difference while St. Etienne, also on six points, climbed to third place following its 1-0 defeat of Guingamp on Saturday.
Elsewhere in Saturday's Ligue 1 action, Gianni Bruno and Adama Ba scored three minutes apart to lift Bastia to a 2-0 victory over Valenciennes, Jeremy Pied scored the game-winner in Nice's 2-1 defeat of Rennes, Reims earned a 2-1 victory over Lille thanks to goals from Mads Albaek and Christopher Glomard, and Toulouse was held to a 1-1 home draw by 10-man Bordeaux.
