The Toronto Maple Leafs have fired head coach Ron Wilson. The team named Randy Carlyle as his replacement.

Additionally, the team announced assistant coach Rob Zettler has been reassigned to other duties in the organization.

Wilson, who was hired by the Maple Leafs on June 10, 2008, leaves with Toronto mired in fourth place in the Northeast Division with 65 points and a 29-28-7 record. That includes a current six-game slide.

During his tenure, Wilson compiled a record of 130 wins, 135 losses, and 45 overtime/shootout losses in 310 games.

"This was not an easy decision for me to make," said general manager Brian Burke. "I want to thank Ron for all of his hard work and dedication to our organization over the past four seasons."

The 55-year-old Carlyle spent seven seasons as the head coach of the Anaheim Ducks. He was fired as their head coach earlier this season after compiling a 7-13-4 record.

Carlyle is the second NHL head coach to have been fired and get a return behind the bench with another club this same season. Bruce Boudreau was axed in Washington and replaced Carlyle in Anaheim.

Carlyle led the Ducks to their first Stanley Cup championship (2007), Pacific Division championship (2007) and five playoff appearances (2005-09, 2011). During his time in Anaheim, Carlyle compiled a 273-182-61 record in 516 regular season contests.
