Cal Poly announced Monday the promotion of Josh Brown to defensive coordinator of the football program.

He replaces Greg Lupfer, who resigned last month to accept a coaching position offer at Colorado State.

Brown had been Cal Poly's special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach the last two seasons.

"Josh brings great enthusiasm to the game as a leader and he's been fortunate to be around some outstanding coaches in his past, which will help him develop into an outstanding coordinator for our defense," head coach Tim Walsh said.

Brown, a 2003 San Jose State graduate, also has been an assistant coach collegiately at Kansas, Sacramento State, Foothill College, Gavilan College and Arizona State, where he was a defensive graduate assistant.

Cal Poly finished with a 6-5 record last season. The Mustangs are moving into the Big Sky Conference this season.
