New York, NY – New York Rangers forward Sean Avery cleared waivers Wednesday and was assigned to the team's AHL affiliate in Connecticut.
Avery was placed on waivers Tuesday, but wasn't claimed by another team within the 24-hour window.
The Rangers are opening the season with two games in Sweden this weekend.
Avery, the enigmatic forward who has made headlines on and off the ice during nine NHL seasons, is in the final year of a four-year, $15.5 million contract he signed in 2008.
The 31-year-old has recorded 87 goals, 157 assists and 1,512 penalty minutes in 565 career games for Detroit, Los Angeles, Dallas and the Rangers. He had three goals, 21 assists and 174 penalty minutes in 76 games for the Rangers last season.
The Rangers also announced Wednesday that defenseman Marc Staal was placed on injured reserve. Staal is still bothered by headaches related to a concussion he suffered in February
New York recalled 20-year-old defenseman Tim Erixon from Connecticut.
