An ultra-cool concept could transform glamping for tech-loving adventurers by allowing them to stream boxsets on a projector screen - in the middle of nowhere.

The Nissan x Opus is a 'trailer camper' with an eco-friendly battery pack that supports up to a week of electricity for adventurers who go ‘off-grid’.

NISSAN TURNED AN ALTIMA INTO A SNOWMOBILE

After ‘inflating’ in less than 90 seconds, the camper opens up to provide a kitchen, seating area and sleeping accommodation for up to six people.

Inside, there are USB sockets for charging smartphones, LED lighting, a 4G mobile WiFi hotspot for up to 10 devices and a HD digital projector.

While most campers have a limited power supply or need to be connected to a mains source, the Nissan x Opus has a high-tech power pack that connects to a solar panel recharger to help generate enough electric power for up to seven days use.

The pack, called Nissan Energy Roam, is a portable, all-in-one, weatherproof unit which uses lithium-ion cells recovered from first-generation Nissan electric vehicles.

With a storage capacity of 700Wh and a power output of 1kW - providing power to both the camper’s 230v circuit and the 12v leisure battery - it ensures a sustainable second-life for EV batteries.

The concept, a collaboration between Nissan and Opus Campers, will be unveiled at this week’s Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show at The NEC in Birmingham.

It forms part of Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility vision and demonstrates ways of integrating its battery technology and electric vehicle expertise into new sectors.

Francisco Carranza, managing director, Nissan Energy said: "Nissan’s leadership in energy services means we are not only transforming the way people drive, but also the way we live.

"The Nissan x Opus concept is a real-world example of how Nissan Energy Roam can integrate into our lifestyles - in this case the hugely popular leisure activity of camping.

"Our customers already have the ability to take control of their energy use at home through Nissan’s residential storage solutions.

NISSAN INVENTED THE BEST HUMP SEAT EVER

"Now we can give them complete independence to experience ‘off-grid’ adventures.

"The new Nissan Energy Roam can deliver clean, sustainable power to the most remote of locations, and be enjoyed by everyone."

The Opus uses AIR pole technology with an onboard compressor to inflate the camper in around 90 seconds.

Hungry campers are catered for with a portable microwave, two-burner gas hob and a fridge. Additional power comes via solar panels.

The concept has off-road tires, alloy wheels, racks for two bicycles and even a kayak carrier mount.

When a top-up charge is needed, the Nissan Energy Roam is easily removed from the modified front compartment.

The unit can then be plugged into any standard 230v socket and recharged in around an hour.

While the Nissan x Opus is a concept at this stage, a standard Air Opus costs from £15,995.

Prices for the Nissan Energy Roam power-pack will be announced ahead of its official launch later this year.

Jonathan Harrison, managing director, Opus, added: “Opus owners really love getting out into the wild and enjoying the more remote corners of the countryside.

“At the moment, to go ‘off-grid’ for any lengthy period, you either turn to a fossil-fuel generator - which isn’t good for air quality or a peaceful camping ambiance - or you compromise on the power you can use with existing battery solutions.

“This new concept integrating Nissan Energy Roam is answering real customer
needs.

“Soon campers might be able to take whichever road - or unbeaten track - they choose, safe in the knowledge they will be connected to a robust and sustainable energy supply.”
