SEOUL, South Korea – A South Korean court has issued an arrest warrant for a leftist lawmaker accused of plotting an anti-government rebellion. The case has caused a political and media firestorm in a country that still struggles with bitter divisions between left and right.
A Suwon District Court spokesman says the warrant was issued for United Progressive Party lawmaker Lee Seok-ki on Thursday, opening the way for his arrest by the country's spy agency.
Lawmakers voted Wednesday to lift Lee's legislative immunity against arrest.
The National Intelligence Agency has accused Lee of gathering about 130 party members in May and plotting attacks on national infrastructure if war broke out with North Korea. Lee has denied the allegation.
The May meeting followed threats by North Korea to launch nuclear strikes against Seoul and Washington.
