A student group is criticizing University of California President Janet Napolitano for calling chants by students protesting tuition hikes "crap," a remark picked up by a microphone that prompted her apology.

The Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/19F2hKt ) reports that UC Student Association President Jefferson Kuoch-Seng released a statement Thursday night saying the comment shows "disrespect for public expression of the student interest" and makes it more challenging to share views with administrators.

Napolitano opened the second day of a board of regents meeting Thursday by apologizing "for using a word "she doesn't normally use." The university's recording of Wednesday's meeting captured her saying, "Let's go. We don't have to listen to this crap," to the board chairman who had just activated his microphone.

Protesters had stripped off their shirts, tossed fake money and chanted.
