Texas has executed a man for the fatal stabbing of a fellow prison inmate 12 years ago.

Lee Andrew Taylor, 32, died at 6:24 p.m. CDT Thursday after receiving a lethal injection in Huntsville. The U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal two hours earlier.

The 32-year-old Taylor used his final statement to tell his mother and wife he loved them and to apologize for the slaying of Donta Greene at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Telford Unit near Texarkana. He maintained he was acting in self-defense and criticized the death penalty as "a grave injustice."

Taylor already was serving a life sentence for murdering a Houston-area man during a home break-in.

He was among only a handful of white offenders on Texas death row for killing a black person.
