Delaware State Police say a trooper responding to a report of a robbery at a Newark home shot and wounded a suspect who refused to drop a gun.

Police said in a news release early Friday that a trooper called to a Newark home Thursday night was confronted by a male with a handgun. When the suspect didn't comply with the trooper's commands to drop the gun, police say the trooper fired, striking him in the lower torso.

Officers provided medical aid until paramedics took the suspect to a hospital in serious, but stable condition. Police say a second suspect in the home was placed in custody without incident and they're looking for a third.

Police say the trooper is on routine administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
