A Bay City, Texas man shot a woman and four children before fatally turning the gun on himself in an apparent domestic incident Wednesday.

Investigators said they were alerted to the incident by children at an elementary school who heard gunshots and called 911, myFOXhouston.com reported.

When police arrived at a home in the 2700 block of 10th Street around 3:18pm local time, they found the six people --- including the gunman who was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"The female and the four kids were transported to Matagorda Regional Hospital, where the four kids were later Life Flighted to various hospitals in Houston. The mother was in surgery as of 6:30pm," KHOU-TV cited Lt. Andrew Lewis as saying.

Their conditions were not immediately known.

While authorities did not release further information about the six individuals, neighbors said they were a married couple with four children aged between two to six.

"At first he lost his job, she had moved out, and I guess they were having marital problems and she went to the women's crisis we have here," neighbor Lisa Perez told KPRC-TV. "Whatever made her come back home this day I don't understand."

Shortly after news of the shooting spread, the Bay City Independent School District posted a statement on its Facebook page.

"A terrible domestic family tragedy took place at a private residence near Bay City Junior High and Cherry Elementary today," the statement said.

"The intent of this message is to confirm that at no time were any students or campuses in any danger today. None of our students or staff have been injured. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family who suffered the tragedy today in Bay City."

Bay City lies 81 miles southwest of Houston.
