George Washington and Princeton Universities banned iPads on campus, not because the new gadget is distracting students from their studies, but because it puts a strain on the universities' Wi-Fi systems.
Princeton revealed that 22 of the 41 iPads on campus caused DHCP client malfunctions, which interfered with other wireless devices.
The iPad isn't the first Apple product to cause Wi-Fi problems for universities. Cornell University information-technology director Steve Schuster said they had experienced the strain when the iPhone launched.
"[We are] working to ensure the iPad does not have devastating consequences to our network," said Schuster.
As these universities’ Wi-Fi infrastructures steel themselves against overwhelming bandwidth demands, Israel had banned the iPad entirely because its broadcasting functions at a higher level than the nation usually accepts.
