Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Kansas City punt returner and wide receiver Dexter McCluster had an infected ankle wound cleaned out and was placed on IV antibiotics, Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said Friday.
Burkholder said McCluster's ankle was sore and swollen after practice on Wednesday but an MRI and X-ray showed no structural damage. McCluster had "a very small cut on the outside of his ankle" that he suffered in Sunday's win over the Washington Redskins, Burkholder said.
After McCluster didn't respond to antibiotics, he underwent what Burkholder called "a very minor procedure" to open the wound and clean it out.
McCluster has not been ruled out for Sunday's road game against the Oakland Raiders.
"He still has a chance to play on Sunday because it is basically a laceration that he had an infection in," said Burkholder.
"I know the big question is does he have MRSA," the trainer continued, "and we don't know that yet because we don't have all of the cultures back."
Earlier this season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were struck with an outbreak of MRSA, a dangerous staph infection that is hard to treat.
McCluster has gained 631 yards and scored two touchdowns on 54 punt returns this season. He has 46 catches for 438 yards and a score.
The Chiefs have ruled out tackle Brandon Albert (knee), tight end Anthony Fasano (concussion) and pass rusher Justin Houston (elbow).
