Washington State has fired head football coach Paul Wulff, athletic director Bill Moos announced Tuesday.

Wulff was hired in December 2007 and led the team to a 9-40 record in his tenure, including a 4-8 mark this past season.

Moos said in a statement that he met with Wulff "at length" on Sunday, then again on Tuesday and decided the program needed "a change of leadership."

"I appreciate all that Paul has done for Washington State football," said Moos. "He was hired with the objective of rebuilding this program and establishing a solid foundation. For that I thank him."

Wulff still had one year remaining on his five-year contract.

"We will begin the process of naming the next head coach immediately," said Moos. "I will not be discussing details of the hiring process, only that I expect to name a successful candidate as soon as possible."
