Manchester, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Manchester United and Arsenal played to an entertaining 1-1 draw on Sunday at Old Trafford in a battle for third place in the Premier League.
At the start of the day, the Gunner held a two point lead over United for third spot, and the clubs had plenty to play for in hopes of avoiding fourth place, which would mean Champions League qualification matches in August when the new season rolls around.
Both teams traded quality chances in the opening minutes of the game before the home side opened the scoring on the half-hour mark.
Ashley Young created the chance for United when he did well to get to the end line and whip a cross into the penalty area. Ander Herrara found himself free at the back post and fire home on the half-volley, putting the Red Devils ahead.
But Arsenal had the better of the play in the second half and Gunners manager sent Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott on as substitutes looking for an offensive spark.
The personnel moves paid off in the 81st minute when Walcott got on the end of a cross on the right side of the pitch, beat young United defender Tyler Blackett and fired a strike on target that took a deflection off Blackett and wound up in behind United goalkeeper Victor Valdes.
United sent numbers forward in front of the home fans looking for a winner as the fourth official's board showed five minutes of added time, but the clubs were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
In Sunday's other Premier League fixture, Yaya Toure netted a pair of goals to lead Manchester City to a 4-2 victory over Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.
City were on the front foot early on and opened the scoring after 21 minutes when Toure blasted one home. James Milner then doubled the advantage in the 36th minute with an excellent finish to the far post.
But the Swans wrestled back some momentum on the stroke of halftime when Gylfi Sigurdsson fired one in behind City goalkeeper Joe Hart.
Swansea drew level in the 64th minute through Bafetimbi Gomis, but Toure gave the Citizens the lead again in the 74th minute and former Swansea man Wilfried Bony burned his old team when he buried the insurance tally in stoppage time.
The result keeps City in second place with 76 points and one game remaining, while Swansea stays in eighth place on 56 points.
