Tijuana claims Mexican Apertura title

Toluca, Mexico – Tijuana won its first ever Mexican Apertura title on Sunday after securing a 2-0 second-leg win over Toluca.

Tijuana claimed a 2-1 victory over Toluca in the first leg at home, and after a scoreless first 70 minutes on Sunday, Richard Ruiz opened the scoring for the visitors before Duvier Riascos tallied another goal one minute later to seal the 4-1 aggregate win.

Toluca was bidding to win its 11th league title, but it was Tijuana, which was founded in 2007, that takes home the honor.

Ruiz broke the scoreless deadlock from close range as he pounced on a rebound after the ball struck the post from a free kick.

Toluca now needed two goals to get back to level terms on the aggregate score, but the hosts were caught on the break one minute later as Fidel Martinez played Riascos in on goal, where he rounded goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera and rolled the ball into the empty net.
