This political ad was not paid for by Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, John Kasich or any of their Super PACs. In fact, it isn’t even intended for an American audience.
TyC Sports, a Argentinian TV network airing the special edition of the Copa América soccer tournament being held this summer across the U.S., created the Spanish-language spot.
The voice over is Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump giving a campaign speech about the dangers of illegal immigration. Against dire statements like, “Our country is in trouble … Thousands are coming through our border,” play clips of the Argentinian national team in action.
Shots of fans of the Albicelestes – as the national squad is known – are shown celebrating in parking lots and stadiums as Trump intones, “They’re coming from all over. They’re coming from South America.”
While the talents of world-class players like Lionel Messi, Sergio Agüero and Angel di María are displayed, Trump says grimly, “These are total killers … We have no protection.”
Near the end, the ad finally gets to the Republican front-runner’s oft-stated idea to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
“We need to build a wall,” Trump is seen saying, “and it has to be built quickly.”
The screen goes dark and a message appears. “The truth: The best they can do … is not to let us in.”
The Copa America is the South American championship of nations that ordinarily takes place every four years the summer after the World Cup.
This year’s Copa America is a special edition marking the 100th anniversary of the first tournament, won by Uruguay in 1916. It’s being held at 10 sites across the U.S.
It opens with the U.S. facing off against Colombia at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on June 3. Argentina’s first match takes place three days later in the same location. The final is scheduled for June 26 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
There is a strong possibility that Trump will lock up the Republican nomination on June 7, when California, New Jersey and three other states hold their primaries.
