St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Sam remains without an NFL team two days after the league's first openly gay active player was waived by the St. Louis Rams, who did not include the defensive end on its practice squad.
Sam, a seventh-round pick in this year's draft who publicly declared his homosexuality prior to February's scouting combine, was left off the 10-man squad that the Rams filled on Monday.
The 2013 SEC Defensive Player of the Year appeared to be the victim of a numbers game, with the Rams already carrying five defensive ends on their active roster and short on depth at other positions.
St. Louis did sign one defensive lineman, tackle Matt Conrath, to a group that also included linebackers Denicos Allen and Kevin Reddick, wide receivers Emory Blake and Justin Veltung, safeties Christian Bryant and Matt Daniels, quarterback Garrett Gilbert and offensive linemen Sean Hooey and Brandon Washington.
All except Allen and Reddick were with the Rams during training camp. Gilbert was a sixth-round pick by St. Louis in May's draft, while Bryant was taken eight spots ahead of Sam at No. 241 overall.
Sam stated his case to make the Rams' active roster with a strong preseason in which he compiled 11 tackles and three sacks in four games. The former Missouri standout led St. Louis with six tackles in last week's preseason finale against Miami.
