Surprise, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Kansas City Royals pitcher Luke Hochevar will undergo Tommy John surgery, according to MLB.com.

Hochevar felt a twinge in his elbow during Monday's game against the Chicago White Sox. An MRI taken Tuesday revealed a sprain in Hochevar's right elbow, and the team expected him to be out until at least late May.

The right-hander will now miss all of the 2014 season.

Hochevar was moved to the bullpen last season and posted a 5-2 record with a 1.92 earned run average over 58 appearances, but expected to compete for the fifth spot in the Royals starting rotation.

Hochevar suffered a similar injury in 2010, but it did not require surgery.
