Carolina coach Ron Rivera says linebacker Jon Beason has restructured his contract, helping the Panthers free up salary cap space this year.

Rivera says, "He did, and believe me it's greatly appreciated."

Rivera did not say how much salary cap space the move creates for Carolina.

Beason was going to earn $5.25 million this year, $6.5 million in 2014, $7.5 million in 2015 and $8.75 million in 2016.

Beason went to three Pro Bowls in his first four seasons in the league with Carolina and didn't miss a game during that span. However, he's missed 26 of the past 32 games since then due to injuries.

Beason says he agreed to restructure his contract because "you do what you can do to help out the team."
