Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado will undergo season-ending surgery on his injured right knee in the coming week.
Executive vice president Dan Duquette confirmed the news to reporters Saturday morning at Wrigley Field.
Machado landed on the disabled list with a right knee ligament sprain earlier this month. He fell awkwardly on his right knee during an at-bat against the Yankees on Aug. 11.
The 22-year-old Machado was an All-Star last year but missed the last week of the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee. He made his season debut this year on May 1.
Machado hit .278 with 12 homers and 32 RBI over 82 games this season.
Dr. Neal ElAttrache, orthopedic surgeon for the Los Angeles Dodgers, repaired Machado's left knee last fall and will also perform the surgery on Machado's right knee.
