Austrian Jurgen Melzer and Russian round winners at the $850,000 Malaysian Open, which is part of the Asian swing on the ATP World Tour.

The fourth-seeded Melzer breezed past South African qualifier Rik De Voest 6-0, 6-4, while the seventh-seeded Tursunov handled Belgian wild card David Goffin 6-3, 6-3 on the indoor hardcourts at Putra Stadium.

In one other second-round match, wild card Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus battled past India's Somdev Devvarman 7-5, 6-4.

The last two first-round matches were contested on Wednesday. Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Australian qualifier Marinko Matosevic, while Italy's Flavio Cipolla advanced by besting Australian Bernard Tomic 6-2, 6-2.

The 2011 Kuala Lumpur champion will collect $155,000.
