Genoa, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) - Maxi Lopez's first-half strike proved to be the difference on Monday as Sampdoria earned a 1-0 win over local rivals Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
Coming off a 1-1 draw at home to Bologna on Jan. 26, Sampdoria went looking to break a two-match winless run in league play and were content to sit back and concede possession for most of the match.
The visitors' defensive approach paid dividends in the 24th minute when they caught Genoa on the counter attack as Eder sent a perfect through ball behind the defense to Lopez, who slotted it past Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin into the bottom left corner of the net.
The result sees Sampdoria improve to 13th place in Serie A with 25 points, while Genoa remains in 11th place on 27 points.
