Bafetimbi Gomis scored three times to carry Lyon to a 4-1 win at Marseille on Wednesday, placing the club two points clear at the top of Ligue 1.

Gomis was handed the chance to put Lyon in front after three minutes when he was brought down inside the area by Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda. Gomis stepped to the spot and easily beat Mandanda with a shot that found the upper left corner of the net.

The lead was doubled after 34 minutes by Gomis when he finished off Mouhamadou Dabo's cross, while Steed Malbranque scored shortly after the break to help the lead swell to 3-0.

Gomis completed his hat trick in the 72nd minute, and Marseille's only reply came five minutes later as Loic Remy pulled a goal back for the hosts, who sit two points back of Lyon in third place.
