Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman led the U.S. women's gymnastics team to gold on Tuesday, and through two rotations of the women's all-around competition on Thursday, it's likely gold is within both Americans' grasp.
Both Douglas and Raisman began on the vault and stuck difficult jumps, ending up with the two best scores after the first rotation. Douglas' 15.966 looked to be hard for any gymnast to beat on any apparatus, while Raisman's 15.900 looked to be as close as anyone else can get.
Instead, Russia's Viktoria Komova, who earned a silver medal at the 2011 World Championships and was sitting in third after scoring a 15.466 in the vault on her first rotation, put together a brilliant routine on the uneven bars and matched Douglas' 15.966, moving her into first after two rotations. Komova is the reigning world champion in the uneven bars, and the score was the best on that apparatus of these Olympics.
It was only the best for about 10 minutes, however, as Russia's Aliya Mustafina followed it with a staggering 16.100, moving her into first overall.
Douglas followed with a fine routine of her own on the apparatus, however, scoring 15.733 and moving to the lead after two rotations at an overall score of 31.699, about a quarter of a point ahead of Mustafina's 31.432. Komova is third at 31.333, and Raisman, who scored just a 14.333 on the bars, is fourth at 30.233, but almost a point ahead of China's Huang Qiushuang, who sits in fifth.
