Chicago, IL – Former Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher Kevin Hickey, who later served as Chicago's batting practice pitcher, passed away on Wednesday. He was 56.
Hickey, who pitched six major league seasons with the White Sox from 1981-83 and the Orioles from 1989-91, was pronounced dead at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
Hickey had been in intensive care since he was found unresponsive in the team hotel in Dallas before Chicago's season-opener against Texas.
"Ask anyone in our clubhouse, every person here appreciated what Kevin did to help the White Sox win baseball games," said White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko. "No one wanted to win more, no one was more optimistic, no one cared more and no one took more pride in his job. He made all of us better."
The colorful left-hander registered a 9-14 career mark with a 3.91 ERA and 118 strikeouts.
