Davis, Mitchell lead Alabama past Toledo 83-41

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Charvez Davis and Tony Mitchell scored 21 points apiece and JaMychal Green added 14 as Alabama routed Toledo 83-41 Monday night.

Davis made 7 of 10 field goal attempts and was 6 of 8 from 3-point range, while Mitchell was 9 of 12 from the floor.

Mitchell and Green also had eight rebounds for the Crimson Tide (8-6), and Senario Hillman had five assists.

Jay Shunnar had 13 points and seven rebounds for the Rockets (3-11).

With Davis and Mitchell combining for 22 points, the Tide bolted to a 30-9 lead. Alabama made 10 of its first 12 shots from the field and limited Toledo to just nine field goal attempts in the first 9:46 of play.

Alabama had a 44-24 lead at the half.

"When we can get stops on the defensive end, that gets us out in transition. A lot of the points came in transition," Alabama coach Anthony Grant said of the Tide's jumping out to a big lead.

"Charvez obviously had a hot hand tonight. Tony was able to get out in transition and made some baskets. Those are the spurts that you love to see with the style that we like to play."

Alabama scored the first six points of the second half and its lead ballooned to 83-40 on a field goal by Justin Luquire with 1:19 to go.

Coming into the contest the Tide had allowed only 49.4 points a game at home, the third lowest in the nation behind Stephen F. Austin and Drexel. They improved on that by holding the Rockets to 41 points.

"We've done a pretty good job defensively," Grant said. "Overall, I was pleased with the win tonight."

It was the final nonconference game for Alabama, which has recorded all of its wins at home. The Crimson Tide will begin Southeast Conference play Saturday afternoon against Mississippi State.

"I'm looking forward to getting started (in conference play)," stated Mitchell, who said that the team has been steadily improving. "I give all the credit to our staff for getting us ready in practice."
