Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - The St. Louis Cardinals have placed outfielder Jon Jay on the 15-day disabled list because of left wrist tendinitis.

Jay last played on Sunday because of the injury, making the move retroactive to May 10. In 30 games this season, he is batting .248 with six runs batted in.

The Cardinals needed another healthy outfielder because Matt Holliday suffered an elbow injury after being hit by a pitch from Cleveland's Corey Kluber on Wednesday. Holliday is considered day-to-day after x-rays revealed only a bruise.

St. Louis recalled outfielder/first baseman Xavier Scruggs from Triple-A Memphis to fill the roster spot. Scruggs was leading Memphis with six home runs and is batting .229 with 18 RBI in 30 games.

The 27-year-old Scruggs appeared in nine games for the Cardinals last season.
