CHENNAI (Reuters) - Top seed Tomas Berdych beat Blaz Kavcic 6-3 6-3 to join Belgian Xavier Malisse in the Chennai Open semi-finals on Friday.
Berdych took 84 minutes to tame his Slovenian opponent and set up a last four clash against either third seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland or Dutchman Robin Haase.
"In the beginning, I was a little surprised. I had never played him before so it was a little tough to know what to expect," Berdych told reporters.
Malisse crushed Germany's Bjorn Phau 6-0 6-2 in 71 minutes.
Phau shocked fourth seed Richard Gasquet in the second round but never looked like repeating that form.
Malisse's semi-final opponent will be either Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic or in-form Kei Nishikori of Japan.
