A Nebraska woman is 230 pounds lighter after having a new type of weight-loss surgery, which removed 85 percent of her stomach, KETV.com reported.

Seven months before her surgery, Christina Chambers, 44, of Beatrice, Neb., weighed more than 500 pounds. Serious health concerns encouraged her to go under the knife for the alternative bariatric surgery, known as the vertical sleeve. This type of surgery was designed for patients who are too high-risk for a traditional bypass.

The bariatric sleeve involves doctors taking the stomach and making it into a long, skinny tube, while keeping all internal connections in the body. In addition to being smaller, the stomach no longer has the section that secretes hormones that make you feel hungry.

Chambers said she is very happy with the results of her surgery.

"I can put the armrest down in the car. I've never in my adult life, ever, been able to do that," she said.
