For one Minnesota woman, a wedding engagement isn’t just about a heart full of love, but a heart full of life, My Fox Twin Cities reported.
Alyssa Sandeen, of Rochester, underwent her first heart transplant in 1998, when she was 8 years old. Her heart lasted 15 years, but heart attacks in 2011, 2012 and 2013 landed her at Rochester’s St. Mary’s Hospital for six months, waiting for a donor. She received her new heart in June 2013.
Her new heart has been busy— she recently got engaged to Adam, a friend of a friend. When she was at the hospital, he showed up to visit her.
“He just kind of came in and surprised me with a stuffed animal, and I thought it was really cute,” Sandeen told My Fox Twin Citites. He eventually asked her out on a date.
The couple recently found out that biopsies of her heart show zero signs of rejection.
“As long as you take care of yourself, and it kind of depends what your heart wants to do, too," Sandeen told the news channel.
What her heart wants now is a wedding. The couple expects they’ll be married in 2016, and their hope is to travel the world.
Sandeen will undergo a cosmetic procedure in March to correct burns on her neck and chest after medicine spilled on her skin during a life-saving CPR administration. She’ll get a skin graft before she walks down the aisle.
