LAPD Asks Twitter Celebrities to Tweet Public of Freeway Closure

Meet Los Angeles' newest traffic team: Ashton Kutcher and Lady Gaga!

Yes the Los Angeles Police Department has reached out to celebrities with large Twitter followings to help them encourage people to stay home and avoid the traffic next month when the 405 Freeway will close.

“The whole idea is just to re-message the theme of avoiding the 405 area and that it’s going to be a mess if people don’t stay away,” Lt. Andy Neiman, an LAPD spokesman told the LA Times. “The other message is to take advantage of this weekend to shop, meet some neighbors you never met before, finish that home improvement project you never got around to finishing or have a block party.”

Celebrities the LAPD are attempting to contact include Lady Gaga, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore and Kim Kardashian, who combined have 30 million followers on Twitter.

“Twitter is a way to reach that whole demographic that could be oblivious to the 405 closure for that weekend,” Neiman told the LA Times.

The LAPD does not believe announcing the closure of the 10-mile freeway via television, newspapers or radio will reach a large enough audience.

Currently, none of the celebrities have taken to Twitter to promote the LAPD’s message.

In Los Angeles, they are referring to the upcoming closure as "Carmageddon."
