Singer-songwriter Ashley Campbell has written a heartbreaking song as a tribute to her famous father, Glen Campbell.
Campbell has been publicly battling Alzheimer’s since revealing his diagnosis in 2011, and last year he released the final recording of his career, a poignant song called “I’m Not Gonna Miss You.” The emotionally wrenching song serves as a fond and fitting farewell to everything and everyone that the disease is slowly taking from him, ending with the almost unbearable recognition that although he will deteriorate slowly in front of his loved ones, he himself will not remember any of it.
That song was featured in the documentary "Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me." The movie also features a song from Ashley titled “Remembering,” which she performs in the clip above.
“I wanted to write something that expressed to my dad how much I wanted him to feel safe … that he didn’t have to worry; I’ll take care of him when he can’t take care of himself,” Ashley tells Rolling Stone Country. “When you’re little, your parents take care of you and make the world is not such a scary place. As you get older, those relationships change and kind of swap places. The kids are the ones taking care of the parents and making sure the world’s not a scary place for them.”
Campbell will release a new, more up-tempo recording of the song as her debut single on June 29 via Dot Records. "Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me" is set to debut on CNN on Sunday on CNN.
