It looks like Rory McIlroy isn’t the only one to have benefited from his broken engagement to Caroline Wozniacki.

Nearly a year after the world’s No. 1 golfer ripped her heart out days after the couple sent out wedding invitations, the tennis star says she’s doing great.

“In my head I had everything until that moment,” the 24-year-old admitted to the UK newspaper the Independent. “I had a great career, I was getting married, I have a perfect family. Everything was great. There was really nothing going against me. I was happy, very happy.”

That all ended with the 10-minute-long telephone conversation in which McIlroy, 25, informed her that their days together had come to an end, a cruel call that Wozniacki first thought was a joke.

As she, and the rest of the world, soon learned, he was completely serious, and as of last fall, she still hadn’t heard from him in the half-year since the fateful call, which left her feeling like “someone close” had “died.”

While it took some time to regain her footing, she now views the pain she went through as a necessary evil, something that has made her stronger than before.

“You have to go through all of that. I think that taught me so much,” she said. “I think I grew up so much in that short amount of time. I also realized who is always there for me and who is just there when things are good.

“And you learn just about life. You have to enjoy it while it’s there. You have to enjoy all the great moments. I think now when I look back, I wouldn’t have been without it. Because now I really know that I’m strong, I know what I want, I know what I  can accept, what I can’t accept, what I need, what I don’t need.”

It’s hard to argue with that conclusion, because just as McIlroy’s career has soared since the split, so has Wozniacki’s.

She’s now ranked No. 5 in the world, as opposed to No. 18 this time last year, has made it to the finals of the US Open, has made new friendsfinished the New York City Marathon and showed off her body in the latest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.

Plus, now she doesn’t have to worry about wearing heels in public.
