VW has unveiled the 6th generation of its Transporter, which traces its roots back to the Type 2 “microbus” that first hit the road in 1950.
Production of the original continued until 2013, when it finally ended in Brazil. During that time, VW introduced a series of all-new vans sold alongside it, each more modern than the last, but all keeping that wandering spirit alive in their own Westfalia kind of ways.
The latest looks more like the most recent ones than its ancestor, but VW did have the good sense to debut it wearing an old school two-tone paint job.
The T6, as it’s known, is snub-nosed, boxy and sports large windows in passenger versions, which are available with second row seats that can face the rear, creating a lounge-like setting with the third row.
Four diesel engine choices are available, ranging from 83 hp to 201 hp, and two gasoline motors rated at 148 hp and 201 hp. The technology on tap isn’t retro at all, and includes automatic emergency braking, radar cruise control and an adaptive suspension system.
Prices start at around $25,000, but that’s converted from Euros as VW tells Fox News that there are currently no plans to offer it in the United States, where the Transporter hasn’t been sold since 2003.
