Think of it as trickle-down economics for sports car fans that really don’t need that sort of thing.

The McLaren 570S is the supercar company’s new entry-level sports car, a mid-engine rocket with the Porsche 911 Turbo and Audi R8 set directly in its sights. It makes its public debut at the New York International Auto Show this week.

The 570S is an evolution of the higher-end, more expensive and more powerful 650S, and features a 562 hp version of the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 used by its big sister, here with about 30 percent new parts, and its 7-speed automatic transmission.

The two cars are about the same size, too, but the 570S gets a next-generation carbon fiber passenger cell that’s roomier inside and has larger door openings, while still managing to keep the total weight of the car under 3,000 pounds.

According to McLaren, it’s good for a 3.2 second sprint to 60 mph and a top speed of 204 mph, helped in part by its form-fitting, aluminum and carbon fiber bodywork.

One thing missing is McLaren’s trick Proactive Chassis Control system, which use an anti-roll bar-free hydraulic damper system to provide the widest range of suspension compliance imaginable in a sports car, but the rear-wheel-drive 570S does feature electronically adjustable, adaptive shocks to get it around turns, and standard carbon-ceramic brakes to slow you down as you approach them.

McLaren is billing the 570S as more of an everyday supercar than the 650S and while pricing has not been officially announced, it's expected to be in the $180,000 range, compared to $265,500 for a 650S, not to mention the $1.15 million the top of the line McLaren P1 went for before all 375 of them sold out.

So, yea, this one's practically a steal.
