Some kids never grow up.
Bruce Weiner made millions selling Dubble Bubble bubblegum, and spent a good portion of it assembling the largest collection of microcars in the world.
But he didn’t stop there.
In 2005, Weiner decided to bring one of his favorite Hot Wheels cars to life.
Called “Whatta Drag” the 1:64 scale hot rod fantasy combined the front of a BMW Isetta bubble car with the rear of a top fuel drag racer. It launched in 1998 and was so popular that it stayed in the lineup for years.
Smitten, Weiner commissioned a full-size (albeit still pretty small) of the car using a 1959 Isetta and a custom rear end anchored by a huge chrome wing and a 502 cubic-inch supercharged Chevy V8 with twin Holley carburetors that’s good for 730 hp and can shoot four-foot flames out of the side pipes.
In keeping with the tapered design of the Isetta, it has just one, very wide, rear wheel wrapped in racing rubber. Unfortunately, it’s never seen the tarmac of a drag strip.
Although the car is fully-functioning, it was built for show, not go. Its creators warning that it’s a dangerous drive.
Don’t believe them? Well, you can soon find out for yourself, because it’s going on sale the weekend of February 16h, along with the rest of Weiner’s collection.
After operating a museum filled with his cars in Madison, Georgia for the past 15 years, Weiner is giving up his hobby, closing the doors and auctioning off the lot of them.
The price? Whatever the market decides, but the pre-sale estimate is $75,000-$100,000.
