The next great American supercar will be built in Canada.
Ford said today that Ontario's Multimatic Motorsports will manufacture its upcoming GT, confirming rumors that surrounded the car’s unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show in January, Automotive News reports.
The two companies have previously collaborated on racing efforts, most recently on the Ford Mustang Boss 302R, which competes in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge.
The GT was developed in secret by what is now known as the Ford Performance division. The two-seat coupe features a racing style carbon fiber chassis and body panels, and is powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 with over 600 hp. Ford says it will have one of the best power to weight ratios of any car ever made when it goes on sale next year.
Don’t expect to see too many of them on the road, however, as the GT will be a low volume effort with a six-figure price tag, but the Multimatic relationship certainly increases the odds that it will end up on the track.
Ford won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966 with the GT40, the car that inspired the GT, and next year marks the 50th anniversary of that event. An encore performance would be icing on it’s very fast new cake.
