In a move that echoes Twitter, Facebook will add trending topics to its website to let users know what other users are posting about at the moment, whether it's the death of a world leader or the Golden Globe awards.
Users in the U.S., U.K., India, Canada and Australia will start to see a list of trending topics on the right side of their Facebook pages in coming weeks. The feature, which is not visible on the mobile version of Facebook, and being tested on Thursday as well, will be available in more countries at a later date.
Facebook said Thursday that the topics people see will be tailored to the user's interests and location.
According to Mashable, at least for now, trending posts will not include sponsored or promoted content.
Tech experts and publications point out the new tool is yet another move by Facebook that mirrors Twitter. Twitter has been showing trending topics for years and allows advertisers to buy "promoted trends," said Mashable.
Facebook has also added hashtags in June and in 2012 started using the term "followers" to describe people who follow people on Facebook but who are not friends with them.
