The Brighton Area Historical Society has rebuilt a broken 500-pound headstone for a local Civil War soldier.

The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell reports a rededication will be held Saturday for the Lt. Col. John Gilluly headstone. The public is invited to the Old Village Cemetery for the ceremony, which is part of the town's Veterans Day celebration.

The ornate headstone had broken into three pieces and was slowly sinking into the ground before volunteers repaired it. They plan to repair 140 headstones in the cemetery.

Historical Society president Jim Vichich says Gilluly was a teacher in Brighton and later attended the University of Michigan to become an attorney. He volunteered to serve during the Civil War and was killed in battle in Fredericksburg, Virginia, at age 38.
