FARMINGTON, N.M. – The father of an international aid worker killed while being held captive by Islamic State militants spoke about his daughter Saturday at a service organization's conference in New Mexico.

Just one day after meeting with President Barack Obama, Kayla Mueller's father appeared at the mid-year conference of the Southwest District of Kiwanis International in Farmington. Carl Mueller, who belongs to his local Kiwanis chapter in Prescott, Arizona, said he wanted to thank members who have lent their support since his daughter's death.

"One never thinks that you'll be on the receiving end of what Kiwanis does," Carl Mueller said, according to the Daily Times in Farmington (http://bit.ly/1BjxSXv).

Carl Mueller, his wife and son spoke with Obama on Friday while he was in Phoenix to visit a Veterans Affairs hospital. Obama expressed his condolences to the family and praised their efforts to set up a foundation, Kayla's Hands, according to the White House.

Kayla Mueller, 26, was captured in August 2013 after leaving a hospital in Aleppo, Syria. Her death was confirmed Feb. 10 by her family and U.S. officials.

Carl Mueller told Kiwanis members at a Courtyard by Marriott Hotel that he has gotten to know a different side of his daughter since reading her journals after her death. Her desire to help people was what led her to volunteer helping Syrian refugees in Turkey, he said.

He then read a quote from a speech Kayla Mueller gave to the Prescott Kiwanis Club in May 2013: "As long as I live, I will not let this kind of suffering be normal."
