Valbuena's injury comes at a bad time for Marseille, which will play three matches in quick succession as well as a Champions League contest on March 13.
Marseille will face Toulouse on Saturday before a midweek fixture against Evian, with another Ligue 1 match at Ajaccio to follow on Friday.
The 27-year-old Valbuena is likely to miss all three games in the league and is hopeful of returning for his team's Champions League second leg contest with Inter Milan.
Valbuena has tallied four goals in 20 Ligue 1 appearances this season for Marseille, which enters the weekend in eighth place.
