United acquires Russell from Real Salt Lake

D.C. United acquired veteran defender round pick in the 2013 Major League Soccer SuperDraft.

Russell, 32, spent the last four seasons with Real Salt Lake and started 68 of 78 regular-season appearances. He scored the winning penalty kick in the 2009 MLS Cup win over the Los Angeles Galaxy.

"We are pleased to be adding a quality veteran defender in Robbie Russell," said United general manager Dave Kasper. "He has championship level experience in our league, and he will be a big addition to our squad moving into the 2012 season.

"We look forward to Robbie's contributions on and off the field."

Russell started his professional career with Icelandic club Breidablik in 2001 and also played in Europe in Norway with Sogndal and Rosenborg, and in Denmark with Viborg.

A regular since joining Real Salt Lake in 2008, Russell can play right back, center back and holding midfielder.
