Manchester, England – Demba Ba scored a controversial penalty line save during a frantic finish, as Newcastle 1 draw with Manchester United.
Javier Hernandez opened the scoring early in the second half when a deflection bounced off his chest and into the net, but Newcastle pulled even after Hatem Ben Arfa won a disputed penalty.
Rio Ferdinand appeared to win the ball cleanly on the right side of the area, and referee Michael Jones initially allowed the challenge, but then consulted with his linesman and awarded the foul.
Ba made no mistake from the spot, as he got United goalie David De Gea to move to the left post and slotted just inside the right post in the 64th minute for his ninth goal already this season.
Newcastle, which suffered its first defeat of the season last weekend against Manchester City, went down a man in the 79th when Jonas Gutierrez picked up a second yellow, and United was unlucky not to earn a full three points.
Nemanja Vidic drove a header on goal in the 80th that drilled Newcastle goalie Tim Krul in the upper chest, then the Magpies stopper denied Patrice Evra from giving United the lead in the 83rd when he turned a shot away from the post.
Another scrum in the area followed before United had another great chance, and Hernandez looked to have the winning goal when his snap header from just a few yards out was held out by the outstretched leg of Simpson.
The slight touch by Simpson worked in Newcastle's favor, as the ball rolled to Krul to pick up. But Krul remained under pressure, as Ryan Giggs headed wide before Hernandez tapped in only to have the goal called back for offside.
Although Newcastle failed to snap its 39-year drought without a win at United, manager Alan Pardew pumped his fist after the final whistle as United players surrounded the officials.
While Newcastle was pleased with the result, which left it in fourth place on 26 points, United picked up just one point on first-place City, which can push its lead to seven Sunday at Liverpool.
Arsenal 1, Fulham 1
London, England - Thomas Vermaelen answered his own own goal as Arsenal pulled out a 1-1 draw with Fulham on Saturday at the Emirates in the English Premier League.
Arsenal had won eight of its last nine, but still extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games in all competitions. Vermaelen swept the ball into his own net in the 65th minute to hand Fulham the lead, but made a great run to meet a cross from Theo Walcott for a header inside the left post.
Arsenal moved to sixth in the standings, as it overtook idle Liverpool. Fulham became just the second road team to take points at Arsenal, as it moved three points clear of the relegation zone.
Fulham had a nice build-up on its goal as Danny Murphy's long ball was chested down by John Arne Riise in the area, but Vermaelen lunged to play the ball and swept it into the corner with a Fulham player lurking.
The Belgian defender made up for the mistake in the closing 10 minutes, as he made a long run to meet Walcott's pass and powered a header off the ground and into the corner to prevent Arsenal from suffering its second home loss.
Chelsea 3, Wolverhampton 0
London, England - John Terry, Daniel Sturridge and Juan Mata scored before the half as Chelsea posted a needed victory Saturday at Stamford Bridge, 3-0 over Wolverhampton in the English Premier League.
Chelsea had lost two straight games at home, three of its last four in league play, and also suffered a Champions League loss Wednesday to Bayer Leverkusen.
The Blues returned to familiar form against Wolves, as Mata set up the opening two goals and notched his own just before half. Terry headed home a Mata pass after just 7 minutes, then Sturridge finished a Mata cross in the 29th.
Mata got in on the action in the 44th, as he turned a pass from Ashley Cole to the center of the goal with his left foot to leave Chelsea in complete control before the break.
Chelsea is fifth on 25 points, while Wolverhampton lost for the fourth time in its last six games and is clear of the relegation zone by two points.
Tottenham 3, West Bromwich 1
West Bromwich, England - Emmanuel Adebayor fired a brace as Tottenham overcame an early deficit for a 3-1 win over West Bromwich at The Hawthorns on Saturday in the English Premier League.
Youssuf Mulumbu opened the scoring after just 10 minutes for West Brom, but Adebayor pulled a goal back in the 26th, and followed Jermain Defoe's go-ahead 81st-minute goal with the clincher in stoppage time.
Adebayor scored his first with a right-footed shot from close range, and Defoe scored the go-ahead goal off an assist from Adebayor with a shot to the bottom left. Adebayor sealed three points when he turned a pass from Gareth Bale into the bottom left.
Tottenham won its fifth straight in league play and has won eight of its last nine during an unbeaten run covering the same span of matches. Tottenham moved to third in the standings, two back of Manchester United for second place.
West Bromwich lost for the third time in its last four, and sits just five off the bottom three.
Wigan 2, Sunderland 1
Sunderland, England - Franco Di Santo scored in stoppage time as Wigan stunned Sunderland, 2-1, on Saturday at the Stadium of Light to end its nine-match run without a win in the English Premier League.
Sebastian Larsson fired Sunderland into the lead after just 8 minutes, but the visitors pulled level on a penalty from Jordi Gomez just before half, and then the match-winner came 3 minutes into stoppage time from Di Santo.
Di Santo scored after James McArthur squared a pass for the goal scorer to tap home for an easy finish, as Wigan added to Sunderland's home woes.
Sunderland has just one win in seven home matches this season, and now sits on 11 points. Wigan remained in the bottom three on nine points, and is just two points off the bottom.
Stoke City 3, Blackburn 1
Stoke-on-Trent, England - Rory Delap, Glenn Whelan and Peter Crouch scored as Stoke City snapped a four-game losing streak in the English Premier League on Saturday with a 3-1 win over last-place Blackburn at Britannia Stadium.
Delap opened the scoring in the 28th minute off a header inside the far post, Whelan doubled the lead with a drive from 25 yards early in the second half, and Crouch neatly finished a long pass from Marc Wilson in the 72nd.
Ruben Rochina notched a consolation goal for Blackburn in the 86th, as it was able to end a scoring drought of almost 600 minutes, but still saw its winless run reach eight consecutive matches.
Stoke City climbed to 12th in the standings, six points above the drop zone. Blackburn remained last, and is now four points from safety.
Norwich City 2, QPR 1
Norwich, England - Grant Holt scored the match-winner in the 73rd minute as Norwich City snapped a four-game winless streak with a 2-1 victory over QPR at Carrow Road that lifted it into the top half of the English Premier League.
Russell Martin had fired Norwich into the lead at home after 14 minutes, but a goal from Luke Young just before the hour mark put QPR on even terms. However, Holt reached Wes Hoolahan's cross to finish from close range, as Norwich won.
Norwich surged to ninth, one point ahead of Aston Villa and QPR, which sits in 11th place in its return season in the EPL. QPR lost for the third time in its last four matches.
QPR and Norwich finished one-two in the Championship last season, and are both proving to be worthy Premier League sides to date.
Everton 2, Bolton 0
Bolton, England - Marouane Fellaini and Apostolos Vellios scored on each side of halftime as Everton won for the third time in its last five games, 2-0 over Bolton on Saturday at Reebok Stadium in the English Premier League.
Fellaini opened the scoring when he turned a cross from Leighton Baines to the middle of the goal in the 49th and Vellios' left-footed finish off a pass from Tim Cahill in the 78th sealed Everton's third road win this season.
Everton climbed to eighth in the standings, but remained well behind the first seven squads. Bolton lost for the fourth time in its last five and remained in the bottom three in 18th place on nine points.
