Florianopolis, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) - Top seed Carla Suarez Navarro and reigning champion Monica Niculescu were among Monday's opening-round winners at the Brasil Tennis Cup.
The Spanish Suarez Navarro humbled Hungarian Timea Babos 6-2, 6-2, while the fifth-seeded Romanian Niculescu got past Slovakian Anna Schmiedlova 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 at this clay court event.
Niculescu captured last year's inaugural Brasil Tennis Cup by beating Russian Olga Puchkova in the final.
In other action involving top-four seeds, No. 2 Garbine Muguruza of Spain snuck past American Vania King 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 and Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova upset No. 4 former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
Meanwhile, sixth-seeded Romanian Alexandra Cadantu bested Brazilian wild card Gabriela Ce 6-1, 6-3.
Also on Day 2, South African Chanelle Scheepers overcame Israeli Julia Glushko 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 and Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova got past Spaniard Silvia Soler-Espinosa 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-1).
