UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Rory McIlroy wanted to play his U.S. Open practice round later than usual Tuesday to test the afternoon conditions at Chambers Bay.
That's the time he expects to be playing on the weekend.
Never mind that McIlroy hasn't competed on the weekend in a month. He missed two consecutive cuts in Europe, and then had the last two weeks off going into the U.S. Open.
The missed cuts don't bother the world's No. 1 player. He says he'll take three wins and three weekends off instead of six weeks of steady play and no trophies.
And he feels good about Chambers Bay. He says it's a true links test, although he believes his American-style game — high and long — will work well as he goes for a fifth major.
