Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Colorado Rockies closer Adam Ottavino underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery to repair a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow on Thursday in Pensacola, Florida, the team announced.

The operation was performed by noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews.

Ottavino, 29, went on the disabled list April 27 with right triceps inflammation, soon after he was promoted to closer.

He pitched 10 1/3 scoreless innings over 10 appearances this season, striking out 13 and recording three saves.

John Axford, in his first season with the Rockies after signing a free-agent deal in the offseason, took over as Colorado's closer in place of Ottavino.
